Back to School

1st day of 1st grade!

Well. . . sort of. Michael had the stomach flu on the very first day of school. A little left over bug from our trip to Heber. He was pretty disappointed. In the middle of the night on Sunday (after he finished throwing up) I told him he wouldn't get to go to school the next day because he was too sick, and he said "But are they still going to have 3 recesses and a lunch?" "Yep." "Oh man!"

He was feeling well enough to go the next day, but he came home and told me he had been too tired to play during recess. Poor kid! I don't think 1st grade was quite what he was expecting. It was a lot more work, and a lot less play. Good thing he has a teacher who is "really, really, really nice!" And, even better, his best friend Ben is in his class.

Michael seem to really thrive during the school year, and we all get along much better when he is gone for a few hours a day. I think he really likes the structure and routine. Recess and school lunch are still the highlights of his day, and he is really enjoying walking home from school with his friends.

One up side to Michael missing the first day of school is that I had an extra day to buy him some new sandals. Seriously. I forgot to buy him new shoes. He didn't really need any new clothes for school this year---although we'll have to buy him some more jeans in a few weeks---but he really needed new sandals. I wish I had taken a picture of his old ones. They were completely worn through the sole. So embarrassing! Anyway, I knew he would throw a fit if I made him wear shoes to school (his feet get hot), so I was relieved that I had an extra day to run out and get some sandals that didn't have holes in them!

Soccer has started up again. I can't figure out if he actually like to play soccer, or if he's just there for the treat. Either way, he's a pretty good player. This year they actually have goalies, and they play on a larger field, so there is a whole lot more running involved. The kids are pretty tired by the end of the game, and they'll probably be relieved when the weather cools down a little bit.

Michael's very favorite thing to do right now is play video games. His favorite game is Lego Star Wars, and he lets me know every. single. day. how much he wishes we owned it. Put it on your Christmas list kiddo. He also loves to play with his Legos, and he loves to be read to. We've been reading a lot of Star Wars chapter books, and he recently discovered the Magic Tree House books.

He's growing up fast, but I'm really enjoying this phase. He's pleasant and a really good helper.

Sorry to hear about the stomach flu, yuck! Glad he's feeling better. Dylan just discovered Matt's old star wars figures and is obsessed! Yes, we have moved several times with Matt's collection of figures (sad but true) and he has finally given the old broken ones to D:) What is it with boys and star wars?
