I'm not quite sure how I feel about this book. It was a pretty good read, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it. I really enjoyed the story line, but there were a few things that really bothered me. For one, the language got pretty bad toward the end of the book. Olivia, the main character was pretty flawed. She was likeable enough, but she was constantly picking fights and taking offense where none was intended---which really drove me nuts. Olivia's half sister Kwan was born in China and believes in reincarnation. She also believes she has "yin eyes" which means she can talk to dead people. Kwan tells tales of a previous lifetime in China, and when Olivia and Kwan travel to China, the reader comes to see that maybe Kwan wasn't so crazy after all. Major themes in the book are love, loyalty and self doubt. I really liked the way the story was tied up at the end of the book. The book was a little bit heavy and slow at times, but overall I enjoyed it.Thursday, February 21, 2008

I usually love Amy Tan, but I can't remember if I've read this one or not...your description didn't really ring a bell so I'm thinking not. I did love "Joy Luck Club," so if you liked her style you might try that one? Check out the "recommendations" link on Bookworms for more suggestions!
