The Hunger Games 2009:02

I'm actually surprised at how much I liked this book. Again, it's Youth fiction, but not boring---at all. The book is written in the far future in the land that once was North America. The evil government has created an annual event called the Hunger Games in which two teenagers from each district must join a televised competition---a fight to the death. The winner (the only survivor) receives fame and fortune. The others. . . well. . .

The Hunger Games reminded me of The Uglies, and also of Survivor on TV. This book was pretty intense, and I quite enjoyed the characters and the new world that Suzanne Collins created. Also the romance. Apparently this is the 1st book of a trilogy, and I am looking forward to reading the 2nd in the series---Catching Fire. I really need to get around to finishing all of the series I've started!

I really liked this book too, but I felt a little manipulated when I realized it was part of a series. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to read the next book. And if you're ever looking for a book to read to your boys, you might try Collins's Underland chronicles. It's for a younger audience, so you might not want to read it for yourself but I've been listening to it on CD and enjoying it.
