The Book Thief 2009:01

The Book Thief is the story of a young girl growing up in Nazi Germany during WWII. The narrator of the book is Death---which is original, yet fitting since we're talking about Nazi Germany. I quite enjoyed the narrator's voice and found him to have a funny sense of humor---if that's possible for Death.

I really, really enjoyed this book, and would definitely recommend it---though I did find the language offensive (At times funny. At times justified. Mostly not necessary). The story line was good, but the characters are what really made me love this book. This is Youth fiction, but I didn't feel the writing was dumbed down like others I've read in this category. Sometimes the writing bugged me---a bit too abstract for my taste. But, at the end I was crying---hard (think "These is my words") ---and I was sorry the story had ended.

I completely agree with your review. I absolutely loved this book - much more than I thought I would - and was so sorry to see it end. Thanks for all your reviews!

I hadn't heard of the first one, I'll have to give a try. The Book Thief is in my "to read" pile. I need to read These Is My Words again, now that you mentioned it!

I don't remember much about the language ... is that surprising? So glad you liked it! If I haven't said it 47 times before - I loved this book!

Yes! This is definitely one of the best YA books out there right now. You might also try his other book I Am the Messenger. It's not quite as good and there might be more objectionable stuff in there (the main character who is 19 desperately wants to sleep with his best girl friend, but he's also classy enough to love her for who she is). But it was a pretty fun read.
