Ten for Tuesday 7.22.08

We took a vacation last week, and I missed my post last week, so this is really 10 for 2 weeks. It's a long one, so hunker down. I'll share some vacation pics in another post.

  1. Hello. My name is Blake, and I'm addicted to binkis. Seriously. This is going to turn into a problem. I know I should have taken away his binki months ago, but I'm sure I could not have survived without it. Quite awhile ago he started waking up crying for his binki at night. That was probably when I should have just gotten rid of it, but instead I just clipped his binki to his pajamas so he could always find it at night. Lately he has figured out how to rip his binki off the clip. So, first thing in the morning he rips off the binki, throws it across the room and then screams bloody murder until I come to get him. Let me tell you how much I like waking up to a screaming child. Every day. Seriously. It's starting to be a real hassle because he'll take his binki off the clip and then drop it in the car or the store or the house, and then almost immediately start freaking out because he can't find it. He often will get two binkis and put one in and then take it out and switch, over and over. He loves his binkis, and I don't know what I'm going to do about it! He's never going to start talking if he's always got that thing in his mouth!

2. A week or two ago the boys and I did this fun activity that I saw on my friend Linn's blog. I froze a bunch of "treasures" in ice and then the boys got to dig them out using different tools and spray bottles. It was a fun idea that kept us from boredom one afternoon. My boys seem to think that it is my full time job to entertain them. Ah, summer. . .

3. Reed and I went back to the Parade of Homes again, and I saw this nursery that was so cute. Not that I will be decorating a girl's nursery any time soon. Just thought I'd share.

4. I neglected my garden last week (along with a lot of other things!), and yesterday when I went out to look, I found these two monsters. What do you do with a zucchini that size? Are they even worth eating?

This is my favorite way to cook zucchini. Slice up one onion and one zucchini very thin. Add to a non-stick pan with some garlic and spray well with cooking spray and sprinkle with salt. Saute for about half an hour until the onions are caramelized.

Not the prettiest picture, but it is delicious!

5. This year I decided to buy a share in a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Farm. I paid up front, and they deliver a bag of local produce to my doorstep every Friday morning through the growing season. One share is supposed to be enough produce for 2 adults for one week, but it seems like they must be pretty generous portions. They put in whatever is in season each week, so it's always a surprise what you'll get. So far we've gotten cherries, raspberries, apricots, garlic, beans, lettuce, herbs starts and local cheese, among other things. It's kind of fun to see what will be in the bag each week, although I have to admit that we've gotten a few things that were difficult to use. . . such as peas, which I vowed long ago to NEVER serve in my home. They actually were okay raw, but no one would touch the ones I steamed. Also, fennel. What do you do with fennel? I put it in the fridge and it wilted immediately, so I'm guessing it either has a really short shelf life, or else it's not meant for the fridge. We have been so busy that I really haven't cooked much lately, and it's been hard to make it through all of the vegetables---especially now that I'm getting zucchini from the garden. Anyway, it's been kind of fun, but I'm not sure if we'll do it again next year. We'll have to see how it goes for the rest of the summer and fall.

6. The boys have a new game they like to play. They say "Guess what?," and then they turn around and moon each other. Who taught them that that is funny? I think they must get their senses of humor from their Dad's side of the family!

7. Ty has decided that he doesn't like short sleeves, and has started to insist on long sleeved shirts every day. At night he insists on wearing his old footie pajamas that are so hot, and then he curls up under his comforter to go to sleep. Crazy kid must get his temperature gauge from me.

8. Reed took his dad, and Michael and Ty to the Father's and Son's camp out, and they had so much fun. Michael's favorite part about the whole trip was stopping at McDonald's for dinner on the way there. He never gets to eat there, and was so excited to show me the Transformer he got from his Happy Meal. I got to have Friday evening and most of the day Saturday with just Blake. Reed told his Mom that when I have the place to myself without any kids I usually clean, but I usually deep clean, so he comes home and he can't tell that I've done anything with my time. Anyway, he wasn't surprised to see me scrubbing down the house when he returned. What is wrong with me?! I can't find anything better to do than clean? I honestly cleaned for probably about 8 hours on Saturday. Once I get going it's hard to stop, because there is always something else that needs the treatment. I washed blinds and windows and baseboards and walls. I edged the carpets and vacuumed and dusted and organized, and by the end of the day the kitchen floor still had not been mopped. How depressing! I did at least enjoy a relaxing night with my book and a bag of licorice, and of course, I enjoyed the 20 minutes that my house stayed clean on Saturday. That doesn't happen very often.

9. I am just barely getting over my cough and sore throat that came on over three weeks ago. I think all of the pollution in the air really affects my ability to breathe. I've taken a really big break from my morning exercise routine, and it was so hard to scrape myself out of bed yesterday and today to go out. It's amazing how quickly your muscles can turn to jell-o when you take a little time off!

10. On Thursday night we had a mega trek meeting. It was the last before we leave in two weeks. I still have a lot to do! We are supposed to be "hydrating" ourselves until we leave, so we don't have to be hooked up to an IV out on the trail. I think I had to go to the bathroom about 20 times on Sunday! I'm really getting nervous about my shoe/sock situation. They are still bugging me a little bit, and I hope I'm not going to be totally miserable because my feet hurt the whole time. They told us to "practice" wearing the shoes and socks we'll be taking, so if you see me walking around with big dorky hiking socks on, you'll know why. Anyway, I'm nervous (about a lot of things), but I'm also getting really excited. It will be a great experience.

That's all folks!

About your boys' sense of humor . . . I seem to remember several mooning incidents in college and they weren't from Reed!

Oooh. I'm suddenly the most interested in hearing more details about Kimber's comment!

About the whole binki thing, I have the same dilemma. Although Austin only gets his when he's sleeping. Sometimes that means he'll cry for a half hour after waking up because he wants them back. Is it really that bad to sleep with a binki? It sure makes my life easier.

Kimber, I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about! As if!

BTW, I may have to censor your comments in the future!

Whoa, Whoa...sensoring of comments This is a good post! I love zucchini and I'm so glad you gave a yummy recipe for it since I have some growing in the garden as well. I had one child that was attached to the binki and I had to throw them all out so I wouldn't break down and give it to her when I was at my wits end. I was surprised how quickly she forgot about it after the first few traumatic nights. Good luck with that!

Okay, Jessica has informed me that my memory is incorrect, so my last comment is now void.
