Cold Sassy Tree 2008:08

Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns is one of my favorite books that I read this year. Set in the early 1900's in a small town in Georgia, this story is told from the perspective of a 14-year-old boy. He tells about his life and town, and how everything is turned upside down when his newly widowed Grandpa Rucker announces his intention to marry Miss Love Tweedy---the young milliner who works in his store. The author's writing style is really remarkable, and I loved the conversational southern dialogue that she used to tells her story. The characters were so vivid, and I really felt like I was transported back to that little Georgia town. This is definitely a book I would recommend, and I am looking forward to reading the sequel.

I loved this book, too! I was so excited to read the sequel, but the sequel was, well, disappointing (to put it lightly). If I remember correctly, Burns had started writing the sequel and then died before she was able to finish it. Her family decided to publish her drafts anyway, and let me just warn you that it is nowhere near as delightful as this book. I wouldn't recommend it at all. So be warned if you decide to give it a try yourself!

I recently read "These Is My Words." I really liked that book. It started off a little bit slow for me, but after I got into it, I really enjoyed it.
