The Friday Night Knitting Club 2008:12

I'm not sure I've ever really read chic lit before, but this is something I would definitely put in that category---a story about women for women, and it was a little bit of a guilty pleasure for me. The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs tells the story of a single mom who opens a knitting shop in New York City with themes of relationships and forgiveness. Women of different ages and backgrounds gather weekly at the shop to work on their knitting, create friendships and support each other through stressful life events. The shops owner, Georgia is struggling with her changing relationship with her teenage daughter and keeping her business afloat when she is confronted with people and issues she thought she had left in the past. I thought this was a fast and easy beach-worthy book, but the twists at the end have a much more serious feel---not quite what I was expecting. I quite enjoyed the author's descriptions of knitting and yarn, and was inspired to learn knitting myself---as were several other girls from the book club. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but it wasn't great. And, some of the content/language would keep me from recommending it.
