I read Fire of the Covenant by Gerald N. Lund in preparation for trek, and I'm so glad I did! It was to neat to be on trek and see all of the places I had just read about, and I think it really enriched my trek experience. To be honest, I don't think Gerald Lund is the best writer, and I wasn't crazy about the book until about half way through. He's a bit cheesy to say the least, and the dialogue really struggles. I found the historical details interesting, but the writing and characters lacking. However, once I got further in, I really started to enjoy the book. Fire of the Covenant tells the story of the Martin and Willie handcart companies coming across the plains too late in the season, and ultimately being rescued before they reach the Salt Lake Valley. The story itself is so incredible and so moving that I couldn't help but enjoy myself. Friday, October 24, 2008
