Wow. That's really all I can say about this book. This is a book that will stay with me for awhile. It is a memoir. Jeannette Walls tells the story of her childhood---which is nearly unbelievable. Every page I turned I thought "No, this can't be happening. . . " The book is very well written, and is written in short segments, so it's easy to say "Oh, I'll just read another page and a half." Then, before you know it, you've read another 20. It's very hard to put down.
Jeannette tells of growing up in extreme poverty with parents who are negligent, selfish, abusive and mentally ill. And yet they teach their kids to read and be curious and love life. How Jeannette made it through her childhood to become a successful writer is really remarkable. And the fact that she can accept her parents for who they are and not be extremely bitter is even more remarkable. This was definitely a good read.
